Having Trouble Transferring TY Points to Flying Blue? You might be in Luck

Update 8/2/17 – Very cool update. The original 25,000 points were deposited to my Flying Blue account today without being subtracted from my Thank You points! So in total, I receivedĀ an additional 60,000 points for free.

Original Post –

I initiated a transfer of 25,000 Citi Thank You points (from my Prestige card) on Tuesday to Air France Flying Blue. It’s generally an instant transfer but after 6 days it still didn’t show up. I contacted Citi (initially through Twitter) and a senior account executive reached out to me shortly.

She informed me that Flying Blue was having this issue with many partners and Citi (surprisingly) was gonna go above and beyond to make sure I can book my flight. She offered me the following. Her explanation is that the 25,000 FB points would’ve allowed me to book a $600 flight.

– They were going to deposit 35,000 additional Thank You points into my account.
– They were going to cancel the initial 25,000 transfer putting them back into my account. If the technical issues on Flying Blue’s side were resolved and I ended up with 25,000 Air France points, I could keep them also.
– This would give me 60,000 points, enough to redeem for a $600 dollar statement credit once the new Prestige changes are implemented.

If you’re having an issue I highly recommend reaching out. They are obviously very concerned with people canceling their Prestige card and are going out of the way to make them happy.

HI JR – Any news on whether the points ever showed up? I am going through a similar experience and it is driving me crazy. I just reached out to Citi via Twitter per your advice and a ThankYou team member has been notified to call me. How long was the wait for them to call you once you were told they would do so? Thank you for this post!!

      Hey Ian,

The points posted for me within an hour or two. I currently have 60,000 in my account (the 25k return and the bonus 35k). I sent them a message on twitter saying I’m going to cancel my card(I am, the Annual Fee is due soon and it’s worth it with the devaluation) and a rep called me within an hour.

Please post back how it goes.

Do you think it’d be worth it to try and transfer 25k from Citi now to purposefully have this issue and try to get the extra 35k?

Obviously no guarantee that it’d work (ie: not work). But if you have extra points and wouldn’t mind the Flying Blue points if it does go through, then I’d say go for it.

I transferred 25k out of Citi. Their terms say transfers can take up to 14 days so it’s actually surprising that they were so accommodating when they had another week for the transfer to go through. When would you recommend getting in touch with them? After a day? Two? More?

Everyone says the transfers are instantaneous or at most a day. I reached out to them after about a week. I’d try in a day or two assuming it doesn’t go through. Be sure to tell them you need to book a flight right away

      Hey Ian,

Whatever happened to your points. I just had the original 25k flying blue points post yesterday (even though Citi had canceled the transaction!) so I ended up getting 60k points extra for free!
Wondering if this happened to others?

Well, I’m sad to report that it worked! Several hours later, I have 25k miles available for use on Flying Blue. Drat…

      Oh man.
On the bright side take a trip to Hawaii! That was the eventual plan (+5000) and the reason I tried. I will doing so again now that it works.
TY points are not the easiest to get great value from.
