Southwest is back with one of their real sales. I say “real” because they offer OK discounts once or twice per month. But around twice a year (usually spring and fall) they offer really substantial discounts.
Here’s a quick run down of the rules before we jump into it
- Book by 10/12/17 (3 day sale)
- 21-day advance purchase required
- Generally speaking availability is November through March with some usual black out date saround the Christmas holidays
Flight Deal Summary
Sale fares are available from all over the country, but we’ll use Austin as an example. You can find the full list here.
Some Great Travel Ideas
I like to plan out my domestic and Caribbean trips around these sales. Last time I booked 5 trips! And because they have a flexible cancellation policy there really isn’t any risk.
Before you say “well United has flights to Denver from $152 RT” please remember that those are basic economy. Not only will you not be able to bring a carry-on bag, but if you do bring one to the gate, you’ll be required to pay the applicable checked bag fee plus a $25 gate handling charge. It amazes me that customers don’t revolt.
Frontier may be slightly cheaper on a few routes. For example, I found a some dates with $40 RT to Denver. Assuming you travel with more than a backpack, you’ll still be over $100 but it can be a good deal depending on your needs.
Southwest Airlines Reminders
As always, your bags travel free. That means a full size carry on as well as two checked bags. Not only that, but you can actually bring your over-sized ski equipment free as well!
They have the most flexible cancellation and rescheduling policy. If it’s a paid fare, they’ll refund it in the form of a one year voucher. If it’s points, they’ll just redeposit it into your account.
Companion Pass – the Holy Grail of travel deals. Your companion flies everywhere you go, for free. It’s saved me many thousands of dollars.
